                              **To Avoid Paying Penalties on Taxes**
  • Make sure that you receive bills for all property that you own. Check off the bills as you receive them and contact the Treasurer's Office at (434) 542-5125 or pberkeley@charlotteva.com if you are missing any bills.
  • Keep the Treasurer informed of any change in address so that future bills will be mailed to the correct address.
  • Mail your property tax payments early to make sure that the envelope is postmarked on or before the due date. According to Virginia Law, the Treasurer must review the USPS postmark date to determine if payment was mailed before the deadline.

                     taxpayer to obtain all tax bills & make timely payment.

Payment Options for Real Estate & Personal Property Taxes
Pay by Mail - Address all correspondences to:  Treasurer of Charlotte County, P. O. Box 267, Charlotte Court House, VA 23923.  Envelopes must be postmarked on or before midnight of the due date.

Pay in Person - Pay at the Treasurer’s office by check, money order or cash.  The office is located at 201 David Bruce Avenue in Charlotte Court House. (If check is not honored by bank, receipt is void.)

Pay by Credit Card - Credit Cards (Including MasterCard, VISA, American Express and Discover) can be used by calling 1-800-272-9829 or on-line at www.officialpayments.com.  When prompted, enter the information requested and use the Jurisdiction Code 6217.  You will be charged a convenience fee by Official Payments Corporation for using their services.


Treasurer's Office Hours
Hours of Operation - The Treasurer's Office is open Monday thru Friday from 8:30 am - 5:00 pm with extended hours before the tax deadline as follows:

Friday, December 4th - 8:30 am to 6:00 pm
Saturday, December 5th - 8:30 am to noon
Monday, December 7th - 8:30 am to 6:00 pm


Direct Payment Program

The new Direct Payment program allows you to make payments on your county taxes each month automatically from your checking account. When you enroll in the program, the amount you choose is deducted directly from your bank account each month and applied to your county taxes.  For more information regarding the program and a list of Rights & Obligations see the program information page and the registration and authorization forms.


REAL ESTATE TAXES
Assessment Ratio:  100% Tax Rate: $0.42 / $100
Real Estate taxes are assessed as of January 1st of each year. Taxes are billed annually with a due date of December 5th and can be paid at the Treasurer's Office at 201 David Bruce Avenue in Charlotte Court House. A 10% penalty is added on December 6th for late payment. Interest is 10% annually and begins accruing immediately after the due date. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve taxpayers of the penalty and interest charge applied to all past due bills.
Real estate values are reassessed every six years by an outside agency in accordance with state law.  The last reassessment took place in 2007.  If you have any questions regarding the amount of an assessment, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue, Naisha Pridgen, at (434) 542-5546 or npridgen@charlotteva.com.
 
PERSONAL PROPERTY TAXES
Value Used for tax Purposes: Trade-in-value Assessment Ratio: 100% Tax Rate Average: $3 / $100
Personal Property taxes are assessed on vehicles (cars, trucks, buses, and motorcycles), trailers, road tractors, farm equipment, boats, airplanes, and business personal property. 

Mobile Homes are assessed at the real estate tax rate (.42 / $100). 

Taxes are assessed as of January 1st of each year and are due by December 5th. A 10% penalty is added on December 6th for late payment. Interest is 10% annually and begins accruing immediately after the due date. When moving vehicles into or out of the county, please contact the Commissioner of the Revenue within 30 days. Failure to receive a tax bill does not relieve taxpayers of the penalty and interest charge applied to all past due bills.

VEHICLE REGISTRATION
$25 Per Vehicle - Billed with Personal Property Taxes
Charlotte County no longer issues vehicle decals, however, there is an annual registration fee of $25 for each vehicle.  This fee is billed with personal property taxes and has a due date of December 5th.
MACHINERY & TOOLS TAX
Value Used for Tax Purposes: Original Cost Tax Rate: $3 / $100
Assessment Ratio: 45% of Cost (Depreciated 10% annually down to a minimum 10% Cost)
 
MERCHANTS CAPITAL TAX
Assessment Ratio: 10% Tax Rate: $3.20 / $100
Merchants capital is the inventory in stock on hand, as of January 1, and all other personal property excluding tangible personal property, not for sale as merchandise and money on hand and deposit.
 
DOG LICENSES

All dogs four months and older must be licensed annually. Dog licenses go on sale November 1 and must be purchased no later than January 31st. Failure to comply with this county ordinance is subject to enforcement by the Animal Control Officer. A rabies vaccination certificate for each dog must accompany order. Tags cannot be accepted.

Dog licenses can be purchased at the Treasurer's Office located at 201 David Bruce Avenue in Charlotte Court House. Orders by mail are encouraged & a printable dog license application is  available on-line.  For more information contact the Treasurer's Office at (434) 542-5125.
 
BUSINESS LICENSES
Charlotte County does not have a county business license requirement at this time.  Businesses operating within the limits of an incorporated town (Charlotte Court House, Drakes Branch, Keysville, & Phenix)  should check with their town office for license requirements.
